This may look like a picture of a random child sulking but after the sad events yesterday involving a dog and a play park full of children I thought it may be useful to know how to behave in the event of a threatening situation with an over excited or aggressive dog.
1. DO NOT scream, shout, wave arms, kick, make jerky movements or run. Any of these will further excite the dog and exasperate the situation. Remember that a hyped up dog can be much stronger than it may appear and that exciting it more will make the situation increasingly dangerous.
2. DO cross your arms over your chest making sure that your fingers are flat against you. Turn your body sideways to the dog and avert your eyes which will make you seem far less threatening to the dog and should help to calm the situation.
3. As strange as it sounds, and as odd as you may look, DO some really big and exaggerated yawning. This again is a calming signal to the dog that you are not a threat.
Wait calmly for the dog to be restrained or slowly make sideways steps away without turning your back on it. Teach everyone you know, especially children, as this knowledge could prevent future injury so please share.
